About Us
We are a husband and wife team of sailors who lived aboard a sailboat for twelve years. We have had many boating experiences, some humorous, some difficult; we learned a lot and we want to share our experiences with you.
We had two different sailboats in England, including the one on which we lived aboard before returning to the East Coast United States. Since our return we have had three different boats on the Chesapeake Bay, including the one that we lived on - that we bought back, and brought over to the US. We have sailed in the English Channel and the North Sea - some of the most difficult boating areas in the world with short, choppy seas, poor weather and heavy traffic. During that time we visited many harbors around the British Isles, France, Belgium and the Netherlands - traveling up rivers and canals, as well as sailing offshore. We have learned a lot from all those experiences, and believe that we have some useful information to share with beginners, as well as other boaters and sailors. We've had experience with having a boat custom-built for us in wood. We were caught out in the English Channel during the Jubilee Week Gales, when a lot of boats were lost. We had to find a boat builder in France, when some caulking came out of a seam - that was an experience as we spoke a little French, but not "boating" French. We've had gorgeous days of sailing in stiff breezes with the sun shining and the waves sparkling; and nights looking at the stars and the phosphorescence shining in our wake. Sailing and boating can be relaxing, exciting, exhilarating and fun - but it needs to be taken seriously. The oceans - and even lakes - do not tolerate mistakes. You need the right boat, the right equipment and personal gear, and the right know how. It's a good idea to keep on learning right the way through life. Although my husband had been sailing since he was a teenager, and I had been sailing for several years before we lived aboard, we took the time to get our Yachtmasters' Certificates in the UK - and it was one of the most valuable courses that we have ever taken. We will be adding to our website, including articles and comments on all these areas, and we welcome comments and stories from other sailors and boaters.
