Blissful Boating Boots


Blissful boating requires blissful boots or shoes. Many people think that boating is all about sitting down, whether in the cockpit of a sailboat or the bridge of a powerboat. Not so! Most boating involves a great amount of standing, walking, going up and down ladders and being in cramped positions where your feet might be scrunched up.




For various reasons having to do with weather, traffic and a tiller that was easier to handle while standing, we have stood up all the way across the North Sea!   That's 70 miles or so of standing.  And then, of course, in a sailboat, you have to be up and down handling the sails, changing course, going below to navigate or cook... and so on.  Power boaters have it a bit easier, but not all of the time.  There is nothing worse than pinched and aching feet.  And shoes designed for land use will not do.  You need boots and shoes that will grip the deck when it is wet and slick.  Often the soles and heels of ordinary shoes will score or mark the deck in some way.   Whatever the material of your boat is, you won't want to have that happen.   So make sure you buy good boating/deck shoes and boots.

Boating boots and  shoes come in a huge variety of brands, styles and materials.   If you are in conditions that require foul weather gear, you'll need boots.   Personally, we would choose high ones, as long as you can bend your knees in them.   Shoes can be made of leather, canvas, and new,  fast drying materials that keep your feet reasonably dry, even in light rain and spray.   They come in moccasins with or without laces, in slides, in pull-ons and with zippers.   There are many types of sandals and flip-flops for good weather.   I generally wear flip-flops.  Sometimes I even go barefooted; but you need to get to know the boat well before you do that, otherwise you can break a toe or two on some piece of deck gear.  And in the hot summer, decks can get very hot - too hot for bare feet.

Take care of your feet for comfort and safety's sake -- and get the best boating boots, shoes or sandals that you can afford.
