Electronic Charts

Electronic charts have several advantages over paper ones.    They come in cartirdges or on discs that can store the equivalent of many, many paper ones, and they come in different scales.   Most can be integrated with GPS, so that the boat's position can be calculated and shown on the chart itself.    This can be done using dedicated chartplotters or using a laptop PC  - some large boats have a desktop computer.   Thus they free the boater/navigator from the time-consuming business of plotting courses by hand, unless you like to do that kind of thing.   The disadvantage is that it's possible to put a paper chart where the helmsman can see it - even if it gets a bit wet at times - which might be damaging to a laptop.   There is a wide range of charts and software available.
