Fishfinders and Depthfinders

Fish finders are very similar to depthfinders, but they provide a greater picture of what is below the boat, incuding the bottom, vegetation, rocks, structures and, of course, fish.    Every fishfinder has a display and control head which is mounted somewhere in the navigation area of the boat, and then a transducer that fits through the hull.   We will discuss and display transducers separately.   Many fishfinders come in combinations with GPS, chartplotters and radar systems.   Obviously fishfinders are of importance to those who enjoy fishing, but the depthfinding capability is a critical one, as well.

Depthfinders, depth sounders or echo-sounders, as they are often called are critical instruments for navigation. If channel markers are few and far apart, or if there are none within sight in coastal areas, then you must give your attention to not running aground. In addition, if you need some backup assistance (if you do not have GPS, and if there are no visible marks from which to get your bearings,) then knowing the depth of the water, and whether you are crossing from deeper water to shallower, or vice versa, can provide you with an approximate position on a chart. That, combined with dead-reckoning, for those of us who still do that, can give a fairly accurate reading.

You will find a wide range of fishfinders and combination systems here and in the GPS and radar pages.
