Transducers and Fishing Systems

Transducers are a critical part of the fishfinding technology.   They are the means by which all the information you need on depth, bottom, vegetation and, of course, fish are made visible to you.   The transducers must be matched in frequency to the display/control head, but they also need to fit your own requirements and the shape of the boat.   Transducers must operate in non-turbulent water without bubbles.   They should be mounted forward of the props, and in a place where they can point vertically into the water, and they will need to have a fairing block to smooth the water flow.

The depth of water in which you normally do your boating will determine the beamwidth of the transducer signal and its frequency.   For shallow, inland waters, a wide beamwidth will probably be best.   For coastal waters, or deep lakes, a large diameter transducer with a narrow beamwidth and low frequency transmitter is required.   Dual frequency fishfinders combine low and high frequency operations to give boaters the benefits of both, since higher frequencies give better resolution, enabling better detection of fish.

Additional aspects of fishing systems are displays, some with 3-dimensional options; the ability to scan from right to left and fore and aft; temperature sensors; bottom hardness display; fish signals, and various alarms for depth, fish targets, and anchor dragging (change in depth.)
